bookshelf

when visiting a house of someone new, and noticing shelves heavy with books, movies, or music, i can’t help but browse and quietly compare them to my own. it almost always opens the door to a good conversation.

these are the books you’d find on my shelves. like breadcrumbs along the path of my life, they mark the influences and obsessions i’ve followed. these are the books that have stood the test of time for me, and i still look back on them with a great deal of affection.

early tech

commodore 64 user's guide

commodore computer • 1982

growing up with a commodore 64, this book and the compute!'s gazette magazine, were how i first started to program. sitting at the computer and typing in programs. great way to learn (and often frustrating) because i'd introduce typos and have to work out what i did wrong.

further this book had the schematics to the computer and it inspired me to learn electronics.

the personal robot book

texe marrs • 1985

nothing more than a brief look at all levels of robots in the 80's. for me it was like the sears christmas catalog , i carried this book around for years, dreaming of robots.

fiction

the hobbit, or there and back again

j.r.r. tolkien • 1937

this was the first fiction book i bought for myself as a kid (mostly for the cover, but i digress), and made me excited to seek out new authors and stories.

jonathan livingston seagull

richard bach • 1970

my fourth grade teacher gave me a copy of this book, and it wasn't until re-reading it much later in life that i realized what she saw in me. a book can be a powerful gift.
